Two Viking girls, a young stowaway and a journey that changes how they see the world. ViQueens is an animated family adventure about courage, friendship and the freedom to choose your own path.
At home in the Viking kingdom of Lofotr, Ingrid and Hedvig know the stories of the Vikings’ great deeds. But what do those stories look like from across the sea — to the people who see Viking ships arriving on their shores?
That question becomes part of a much bigger adventure when the two friends set out to take a young stowaway home to China. From cold fjords, their journey leads across distant seas, through Constantinople and along the Silk Road towards the emperor’s palace. Along the way, they encounter new people, unfamiliar customs and challenges that take more than brute strength to overcome.
Ingrid is the king’s daughter: smart, strong-willed and used to getting her own way. She longs for adventure and the glory that comes with it. Hedvig is the blacksmith’s daughter, fearless and practical, with a sharp remark never far away. Where Ingrid dreams, Hedvig acts. Together, they must navigate a world that does not bend to the princess’s expectations.
Their stowaway, Chung, is a young Chinese prince who has ended up far from home. He is curious, inventive and skilled in kung fu, but he is also a boy who misses his family. Getting him home brings the girls closer to each other and to the people they meet.
The further they travel, the more they question their image of the heroes back home. They discover that the Vikings they admire are feared as raiders elsewhere. It points them towards another way of engaging with the world — through curiosity, knowledge and friendship.
ViQueens combines action and humour with a story about growing up, seeing your own background through fresh eyes and daring to do things differently. Viking ships meet Chinese dragons and fireworks, and a new generation challenges old assumptions.
The film is directed by Harald Zwart, from a screenplay by Harald Zwart, Veslemøy Ruud Zwart and Stella Zwart. Veslemøy Ruud Zwart is the producer, Gimpville handles the animation, and Christophe Beck is composing the score.
